What is a Birth Chart?
Also known as a "natal chart", A birth chart is a snapshot of the sky at the exact moment you were born.
It maps your natural tendencies, emotional patterns, decision-making style, and life themes. It shows how you think, how you move, what challenges you repeat, and where your strengths actually are. But a chart on its own doesn’t explain what any of it means for your life right now.
Key Chart Points
I’m going to help you locate three key points in your chart to get you started — your Ascendant (Rising), your Sun, and your Moon.
This will give you a basic understanding of how to read your chart and begin connecting the pieces.

How to find your Ascendant/Rising Placement
The Ascendant (also called the Rising Sign) is the sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the exact moment you were born.
It’s how you naturally present yourself, how people experience you first, and the way you instinctively approach life.
Now, where to find it on the chart:
Look at the left side of the chart wheel—around the 9 o’clock position.
You’ll see it labeled as “AC” or “ASC.”
That point marks the beginning of the entire chart.
That’s your Ascendant.
How to find your Sun & Moon Placements
First, look at the symbols box or table on the chart (usually on the side or bottom).
You’ll see a list of planetary symbols.
- The Sun looks like a circle with a dot in the center ☉
- The Moon looks like a crescent ☽
Find those two symbols in the list.
Now match them to the chart wheel.
Scan the chart until you see those same symbols placed inside the circle.
Each one will be sitting inside a section marked by a zodiac sign.
The zodiac sign that the symbol is sitting in is its placement.
So:
- Wherever the ☉ is → that’s your Sun sign
- Wherever the ☽ is → that’s your Moon sign
